Meet this week’s #InternoftheWeek, Matt Kern! Matt’s going to be a senior at Bradley, and he’s got a lot of internship experience under his belt! Be sure to attend tonight’s mixer at Pekin Insurance and all our #InternMixers to talk to him and our other great regional summer interns!
Q: Introduce yourself and tell us a little bit about you!
A: My name is Matt Kern, and I am from Zionsville, IN, the suburbs of Indianapolis. I go to Bradley University where I’m studying Industrial Engineering with a Focus in Logistics and Supply Chain. In my free-time, I like to work-out, hang out with friends, and meet new people. Passions I have include traveling, hiking, and staying active.
Q: Tell us about your current position.
A: I currently work as a Procurement Intern for Caterpillar in their Energy & Transportation Division. I work hand in hand with suppliers and support our Buyers throughout their daily work. In addition, I am currently in the process of helping plan our large Supplier Advisory Council in Detroit, MI. I have really enjoyed this project, because I have had the opportunity to plan an important meeting and to communicate with CEO’s of our suppliers.
Q: How does this internship compare to other internships/jobs you’ve held in the past?
A: I have previously worked for Johnson Controls (JCI) in Milwaukee, WI and HNI Corporation in Muscatine, Iowa. Both were amazing experiences. At HNI, I worked as a manufacturing engineer improving efficiency in a facility and implementing lean principles. Contrary to my procurement roles in both JCI and Cat, it was very hands on. At JCI and Cat, I have worked in office spaces, spending a lot more time on data analytics and in meetings. What I have especially liked about Caterpillar is the opportunity to meet so many great people. Having attended Bradley, I already had such a strong network of Cat members that I knew. I have reached out to them this summer to grow and develop, and I really appreciate having the opportunity to learn not only about Caterpillar, but also about personal development and life in general.
Q: What are you looking forward to most about your summer here in Greater Peoria?
A: I am really excited to be here all summer, because I have heard this city is more exciting in the summer. I am especially looking forward to Tail Gate ‘N Tall Boys (Country Concerts), the Farmers Market, and visiting Grandview/Peoria Heights and Staved Rock.
Q: What community are you staying in and what are your thoughts on that community/your summer crib?
A: I am staying in an off campus house near Bradley University. I really like living near campus because I am familiar with it and have access to a free gym. I also really enjoy being around all my good friends, because most of them have internships in Peoria this summer as well.
A: I am excited to meet more people, especially Cat interns. There are so many of us in the Peoria area, and I want to meet as many people as possible.
Q: Do you have a favorite restaurant, coffee shop, or hang-out spot here in town?
A: Favorite Restaurant- Sushi Co. Favorite Coffee Shop- Zion Coffee. Favorite Hang-out Spot- One-World
