Greater Peoria #InternoftheWeek: Joe Sposato

Our newest #InternoftheWeek, Joe Sposato! Joe’s a Peoria native who’s working for Maui Jim this summer, but he’s already learned new things and met new people at our #GPInternMixers. Read all about his experience below, and we’ll catch you at tonight’s Peoria Chiefs baseball game!

Q: Introduce yourself and tell us a little bit about you!

A: My name is Joe Sposato and I am a Mathematical Business major at Wake Forest University, with minors in Statistics and Economics. I chose to go to Wake because it offered an academically challenging truly liberal arts curriculum as well as many extra curriculars for me to enjoy, while giving me a break from Midwestern winters. At Wake Forest I participate in a variety of activities- I am a member and Recruitment Coordinator for their marching band, a tour guide, an active member of the Catholic Community on campus, and a brother of Alpha Kappa Psi, the professional business fraternity. When those organizations are not keeping me busy, I love to run and read historical nonfiction and economics books.

Q: Tell us about your current position!

A: I am currently the Sales Strategy intern at Maui Jim. This role has provided me with a variety of responsibilities, including geographically redefining our sales regions and territories, building call cycles for Account Executives, and preparing sales and account analysis reports for the Sales team. When I am not working in spreadsheets, I am learning software tools from coworkers in various departments.

Q: How does this internship compare to other internships/jobs you’ve held in the past?

A: My current internship is completely different from the job experiences I have had in the past. My boss encourages me to ask questions and learn, and has given me a variety of different tasks to keep me challenged during the summer. I love the opportunity to apply the skills I have been developing at college and the freedom I am given to truly engage with the needs of the company. Apart from my work I love the culture at Maui Jim. There is a real sense of community here, and the other people in the office have made a considerable effort to introduce themselves to me and make themselves available to help me develop my software skills or learn about the sunglass industry.

Q: What is your opinion of the area?

A: I was familiar with Peoria before I began my internship as I went to Peoria Notre Dame High School. I love the short commutes, restaurant variety, and summer weather which Peoria offers. My favorite part of Peoria is all the coffee shops around town. There seems to be a different café for every taste and ambience one could ever want.

Q: What are you looking forward to most about your summer here in Greater Peoria?

A: Besides my job, I am looking forward to spending time with family and participating in the Peoria Municipal Band. The band performs twice a week, keeping my skills sharp for when I have to return to campus in early August for band camp. I also love running and biking on the Rock Island Trail and on Grandview Drive.

Q: What community are you staying in and what are your thoughts on that community/your summer crib?

A: I am staying in Peoria Heights this Summer. The Heights offers fantastic restaurants and is at the center of everything Peoria has to offer- I am just a short drive away from Grand Prairie, Northwoods, and downtown.

Q: What are your thoughts on the intern mixer series?

A: I have enjoyed attending the intern mixer series. It has allowed me to meet other young adults in the area and hear about their internship experiences and all of the opportunities in this city. I especially enjoyed the recent mixer at BumpBoxes, as I am a Peoria resident and did not even know that company was here! I am very excited for the Maui Jim mixer when the other interns can finally see my work home.

Q: Do you have a favorite restaurant, coffee shop, or hang-out spot here in town?

A: My favorite coffee shop in town has to be 3030 Coffee Co. They have the best miel latte I have ever had and they are constantly bringing in new espressos and coffees so even their most dedicated customers have something new to try. It is a great spot to read or meet old friends, and their coffee is fairly priced for its high quality.

Make sure you register for our intern mixer series here, to see Joe and the other Maui Jim interns at their mixer on Thursday July 12th!
